Film premiere set for Westmoreland venue

ADVERTISEMENTS

On November 21, at 8 pm, “The Woods” will be screening the Portland premiere of award-winning director Cory McAbee’s film “Stingray Sam”.

Described as “a science fiction/western/musical”, and filmed in black and white interspersed with color collage animation, “Stingray Sam” is the latest film by writer/director/actor McAbee, whose band also provides the soundtrack. David Hyde Pierce narrates.

McAbee’s previous film, “The American Astronaut”, reportedly reached cult status and wide critical acclaim.

When asked why he chose Portland as one of the cities for the current international premier tour of the film, Mr. McAbee responded, “Portland has always been on [his band] The Billy Nayer Show’s tour route.”

He continued, “We haven’t toured the west coast for a couple of years. We’ve been making movies and recording music. Before the break we were playing at Dante’s a couple times a year.”

Vivien Lyon, co-owner of Westmoreland’s new “The Woods”, contacted the director and offered the new music venue for the screening. Mr. McAbee will be in attendance to present the film.

Available for downloading on the Internet at: www.stingraysam.com, the film, presented in six episodes as homage to serials of the early to mid 20th century, is also intended for viewing on smaller media, such as computers and mobile phones.

The Woods is located in the former Wilhelm’s building at 6637 Milwaukie Avenue in Westmoreland.
