Chapin to speak at Assn. Of Home Businesses.

The Thursday, February 21st, meeting of the area-wide Association of Home Businesses in Sellwood will feature a program by Nancy Chapin, guru of all Portland area business associations, and herself a home business owner, who will discuss resources available to home businesspeople locally. The meetings are held at SMILE Station, on the southeast corner of S.E. 13th and Tenino, one block south of Tacoma Street in Sellwood. The 6-9 pm meeting includes a buffet supper; you don’t have to be a member or even a home businessperson to attend. RSVPs requested for food planning; to RSVP or for more information, visit: www.AHBoregon.org, or call Eric at THE BEE: 503/232-2326.

“Sunshine Liquidators” to be displaced in Woodstock. THE BEE has received the following statement from Goodwill Industries, which bought the building occupied by the popular “Sunshine Liquidators”: “The Portland Planning Commission has approved the use of 6125 S.E. 52nd Avenue, the current site of Sunshine Liquidators, for a future Goodwill retail store. However, Goodwill Industries is not able to provide any further information until the vacancy of Sunshine Liquidators has been completed, which is expected on March 30, 2008.” No comment has been received from the business that Goodwill is apparently displacing.

Sellwood’s “Burdigala Wines” offers special events. Didier Sudre of Burdigala Wines, S.E. 13th Avenue in Sellwood, announces that the store is offering a large number of wine-tasting and other special events each month, many of them free — consult the store for the list. One event that is very appropriate to this month is on Thursday, February 14th — a Valentine’s Day Special, from 6 to 9 pm, featuring live music with Cronin Tierney, Champagne, chocolate, a rose for the Lady, and a romantic singer, all awaiting visitors in the cellar, before you go to dinner elsewhere. $15.00 per person; RSVP required — by e-mail at: burdigalawine@yahoo.com, or by calling 503/309-6297.

“Spoiled Rotten” departs Westmoreland for West Linn. Debbe Garbe, owner of “Spoiled Rotten”, which succeeded “Thinker Toys” in the space on S.E. Bybee Boulevard just west of Milwaukie Avenue, announces that her store has itself moved away — in this case, to 656 Hood Street, Suite 104, in West Linn Central Village. The phone number there is new, 503/744-0289, but the business has the same hours and welcomes former customers to visit. For its part, Thinker Toys moved to Multnomah Village, where it is still open.

Sellwood-based engineering firm expands. Harper Houf Peterson Righellis, Inc., a local civil engineering, landscape architecture, and surveying firm based at 205 SE Spokane Street, Suite 200, in Sellwood and founded in 1990, in mid-December announced its acquisition of Gaylord Land Surveying Inc. Patrick M. Gaylord, formerly the President of Gaylord Land Surveying Inc., will co-manage the survey department of the combined firm with HHPR’s current manager, Brian Henson, PLS. In 2006, Gaylor received the “Oregon Surveyor” Article of the Year award from the Professional Land Surveyor’s of Oregon (PLSO) and was named the 2006 Surveyor of the Year.

Eastmoreland Grocery reopens. Neighborhood residents and former restaurateurs Pat and Colleen Mendola late last year purchased the Eastmoreland Grocery Store, and reopened their newly-renovated “Eastmoreland Market & Kitchen” on Wednesday, January 23rd. The grocery store has been an anchor in the community since 1924; the new owners’ plans include adding a small, Mediterranean influenced café to the store, with a market offering fresh, local produce, fine wines, pantry staples, as well as high-quality ingredients for culinary enthusiasts.

Caprial’s to participate in youth benefit this month. Caprial’s Bistro on S.E. Milwaukie at Bybee in Westmoreland, with Dobbes Family Estate and Dunham Cellars, is participating in the benefit “33 Restaurants, 59 Winemakers, 3 Memorable Evenings”, the proceeds of which are directed to several youth-oriented charities. Reservations are now being accepted online at: www.classicwinesauction.com for the winemaker dinners. Each dinner offers a varied number of seats depending on the venue and tickets are $150 per person, including dinner, wine and gratuity. For more information, call 503/972-0194.

Ice cream shop reopens on Woodstock Boulevard. The former “Island Creamery” has changed hands, and on the weekend of January 19-20 held its grand reopening as “Surf Shack Ice Cream and Frozen Yogurt”. The store, on the south side of the Safeway building next to the Subway Sandwich Shop, is now owned by Brad Bachman — and conducted a grand opening promotion that weekend which included 99-cent ice cream cones, a contest to win a beach cruiser bike, and door prizes.

“Teen Safe Driver Program” announced by local agency. A new program that helps young drivers overcome the challenges of learning how to drive is now available to American Family Insurance’s automobile customers in Oregon. “Teen Safe Driver” provides teens and their parents an in-vehicle video and audio unit that captures risky driving behaviors. Parents log in to an Internet website, www.teensafedriver.com, to view the student’s driving report card, plus video events and coaching tips, including objective, third-party assessment of the teen driver’s driving performance compared with other teens. For more information contact Sellwood American Family insurance agent Lee Cannon at 503/235-1545.

Free “Landlord Study Hall”. These monthly meetings for landlords are presented by KJK Properties and are “open to unlicensed individuals of the community at no cost”. The February topic, on Wednesday the 13th 6:30-8 pm, is “Eviction Processes and Collections”. It’s held at All Saints Episcopal Church, 40th and S.E. Woodstock Boulevard, and an RSVP is required. Call 503/772-8825, extension 6, to RSVP.
