Sellwood ride celebrates new Spokane Street bike boulevard

ADVERTISEMENTS

Mayor Sam Adams and the Portland Bureau of Transportation joined the Sellwood neighborhood celebration Saturday to open the new bicycle boulevard on Southeast Spokane Street.

The new boulevard covers nine blocks along Spokane Street from 19th to Sixth avenues. It is one of the first of 15 new miles of bike boulevards planned by the city.

Bicycle boulevards are designated routes for cyclists near major streets. They are installed on residential streets with low traffic volume. The project includes improved pedestrian crossings, stormwater management, traffic calming, reconfigured stop signs and bicycle parking.

The city will use federal stimulus money to add more pavement markings and signs once the weather warms.

If we are lucky they will all be on the Sellwood Bridge when it collapses.

Re: Sellwood ride celebrates new Spokane Street bike boulevard

If you were to take all of the money the city has spent on bike infrastructure over the past 20 years it wouldn't pay for a new bridge. Spending $100k to make a bike boulevard that connects a well utilized trail with a community center, parks, and residential streets hardly is the reason a new bridge has not been built.

OK, just as soon as "The City That Works" starts registering the bikes and the bike riders and CHARGING them for all the improvements, I might get behind it. I'm pretty sure that bikes and their riders DON'T pay road use taxes.

I own a bike and a car. I pay registration fees and gas taxes associated with my car. I also pay property taxes. When I bike, I most certainly am biking on roads that I have helped pay for.

OK, Multi -- that's good for now but who is going to pay these things when they get 50% riders? Oh, I know, lets jack up the gas tax or raise the property tax or just charge tolls to get in and out of the city, that would just suit me fine. They have already made it un-livable. It used to be "the city that works" now it's "the city of jerks".
